To handle online bookings hotels had come to rely too heavily on online travel agencies, which were taking advantage of hotels’ discomfort with newer means of distribution. These industry professionals didn’t see why hoteliers should depend on expensive third-party sites to get these sales that were daily becoming an increasing portion of their overall business.
They thought instead that it made the most sense—and profit—to be direct. To minimize costly intermediaries and sell rooms from a hotel’s direct website, hands-down the cheapest channel.
